State Representative Ralph Sheffield Announces Run for
Re-Election for House District 55 Seat
Vice-Chair of the House Defense and Veterans Affairs Committee
and Local Small Businessman files paperwork for re-election
TEMPLE – Republican Representative Ralph Sheffield filed to seek re-election to the Texas House, District 55, which now includes all of Lampasas County as well as the majority of Bell County. Sheffield is the owner and operator of the local restaurant and catering service, Las Casas Restaurant and Catering, and was first elected to the Texas House in 2008.
“I look forward to taking my conservative record to the voters of District 55, and, hopefully, earn another term. Texas needs to maintain an environment for creating jobs. Our low tax, low regulation business climate is the only way to keep Texas moving forward,” said Sheffield.
During the 82st Legislative Session, Representative Sheffield supported a state budget that cut over $15 billion in spending without raising taxes. He fought to protect our elections by voting for a tough Voter ID law that requires all voters to provide identification before casting a ballot. He also co-authored a sonogram bill that protects the most vulnerable in our society, the unborn, by requiring doctors to perform a sonogram and make it available to the patient at least 24 hours before conducting an abortion. Representative Sheffield also voted for a strong piece of tort reform legislation called “loser pays” that will reduce frivolous lawsuits by requiring a plaintiff to pay the winning party’s legal fees if their complaint is judged to be groundless.
Representative Sheffield conservative record in the 82nd Legislature earned him Texans for Fiscal Responsibility’s Taxpayer Advocates Award and Texas Association of Business’ Champion of Free Enterprise Award.
“In these tough economic times, it was an honor to work with my colleagues to pass a lean and balanced budget that cut spending by $15 billion dollars without raising taxes,” Sheffield said. “Now, we must exert our rights under the 10th Amendment so that Washington’s reckless spending and excessive mandates does not harm our best in the nation business climate,” he added.
Representative Sheffield served as Vice-Chair of the Defense and Veterans Affairs Committee and as a member of the Energy Resources, and the Rules and Resolutions Committees. He also served on the Rural Legislators Caucus, the Veterans Caucus, and the Sportsman Caucus. Ralph and his wife, Debbie, attend First United Methodist Church Temple. They have four grown children and two grandchildren.
